Diffuser Blends for Fall and the Christmas Season
With the end of summer comes fall and then the Christmas holiday and all the wonderful sweet smells of homemade pies, cookies, warm dinners – and time spent with family and friends.
I love fall and all the leaves changing colors, Christmas with snow on the ground and crisp sunny days, lazy days on the couch curled up in a warm blanket, watching too much TV and sipping warm drinks.
As the seasons are upon us, it’s time to go from summer blends to fall and Christmas diffuser blends. Below are a few of my warm and spicy recipes.
Be sure to follow the directions of your specific diffuser when adding water. Another thing to remember between recipes is to rinse the water reservoir so you don't have traces of your last blend.
Warm and Spicy Cider Blend
This is a diffuser recipe that reminds me of my Mom baking around the holidays.
- 2 drops Clove Essential Oil
- 2 drops of Cinnamon Essential Oil
- 2 drops of Ginger Essential Oil
- 1 drop Orange Essential Oil
Another variation of the Spicy Cider Blend is:
- 4 drops Orange Essential Oil
- 3 drops Cinnamon Essential Oil
- 3 drops Ginger Essential Oil
Both of these are great recipes, it just depends on the right scent for you. For this recipe, I didn't keep my diffuser on continuous flow; I used the 30 second burst setting.
Here is a similar recipe I put in a saucepan and let simmer on the stove. It's yummy.
- 2 cups water
- 1 Orange sliced in thin sections
- Peels from one red apple
- 2 Ceylon Cinnamon Sticks
- 3 teaspoons Whole Cloves
When I peel the apple I make sure I leave a little of the apple on the peel. I also break the cinnamon sticks into small pieces. If you don’t have cinnamon sticks, you can add one teaspoons cinnamon powder - adjust up to your liking.
A Walk Through the Christmas Tree Lot
This recipe reminds me of a cold night when you and your family are walking through a Christmas tree lot looking for just the right tree.
- 4 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
- 3 drops Silver Fir Essential Oil (white fir or Idaho blue spruce will do as well)
- 2 drop Cedarwood Essential Oil
Sweet Christmas
This has a fresh herbaceous scent, a little spicy, slightly sweet with a hint of citrus. It's nice and it reminds me of Christmas.
- 4 drops Bergamot Essential Oil
- 3 drops Cedarwood Essential Oil
- 2 drops Holy Basil or Basil Essential Oil
Relaxation Diffuser Blend
I find this a nice blend to use after a crazy day. I’ll turn on my diffuser and relax on the couch with a good book, my tablet, or while watching a TV show.
- 2 drops Sage Essential Oil
- 3 drops Roman Chamomile Essential Oil
- 3 drops Bergamot Essential Oil
- 3 drops Lavender Essential Oil
I hope you enjoy these as much as I do. If you have a favorite fall diffuser blend you'd like to share, leave us your comment.

Performing a Patch Test and a Few Safety Tips.
If you are new or not sure how a blend or essential oil may react on your skin, it is always recommended to do a patch test prior to use. To do this, mix 2 drops essential oil to about 1/2 teaspoon carrier oil then apply to a patch of skin such as the forearm. Observe that area over the next 1 to 2 hours for any noticeable reaction; this will usually occur within 5-10 minutes. If you experience any irritation or discomfort either stop using or adjust the amount of essential oils you've used.
If you have not used a carrier oil before, you can also perform a patch test to the inner arm area.
Prior to using essential oils, always check the label for appropriate usage and do not apply essential oil to sensitive areas like the eyes, ears, and mucous membranes. If you have a medical condition and/or you are taking medications, consult your physician prior to use.
